Viola Davis earned the best supporting actress Globes award for her work in Fences. Fences is a cinematic illustration of the in-depth play written by August Wilson. Davis thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press, Paramount, and everyone who believed in Fences during her acceptance speech. Davis thanked Denzel Washington and her family before honoring her late father, Dan Davis. Viola Davis’s powerful speech received heartfelt applause.
Tracee Ellis Ross’s work in Black-ish received her first Globes nomination and award for the best actress in a comedy TV series category. Ross delivered an empowering speech that united the audience. She thanked ABC, the Hollywood Foreign Press, and her family. Ross acknowledged the “beauty and sameness of stories that are outside of where the industry usually looks”. Ross then received applause from the crowd.
